Ex: This problem is getting me down. It’s a hard nut to crack.

A couch potato: người lười biếng, chỉ thích nằm và xem TV

Ex: Mark is staying at home and watching TV all the time. He is a couch potato.

Cut the mustard: đủ tốt để làm điều gì, đạt được kỳ vọng

Ex: I don’t think I’m too old to cut the mustard. If you give me a chance, I’m sure I can do the job well.

A bad egg: người không đáng tin cậy

Ex: James is such a bad egg. I have never asked him for advice.

Flash in the pan: thành công đột ngột nhưng chỉ là nhất thời

Ex: Most of them are flash in the pan, especially pop singers.

Hot potato: vấn đề gây tranh cãi, khó giải quyết

Ex: The abortion issue is a political hot potato in the United States.

Ex: Tiki started out as a bookseller, but now they offer everything from food soup to nuts.

Ex: Union members’ frustrations boiled over in demonstrations this weekend.

Curry flavor: nịnh hót, tâng bốc ai đó để xin ân huệ

Ex: Jim tried to curry favor with the new girl by telling her she was the prettiest girl in the class.

Ex: He’ll have to eat humble pie now. Serve him right – he tried to make us all look bad.

Walk/be on eggshells: hết sức cẩn thận

Ex: If you’re sick you don’t want people treating you differently, and you really don’t want people walking on eggshells around you.

Ex: The music festival tickets are selling like hot cakes.

Upset the apple cart: làm rối tung hoặc hỏng 1 thứ gì đó

Ex: He is now working at a local department store. Needless to say, the workload is colossal but he is only paid peanuts.

Ex: The second-hand Iphone I bought last week was really a lemon. I thought I won a real steal as soon as I came to realize that it had a Google Play Store app and broke down a week later.

Go bananas: một nước đi điên rồ

Ex: When we arrived, Mary was going bananas and shouting at everyone.

A big cheese: một người có tầm quan trọng và uy quyền

Ex: Anna thinks she is a big cheese now that she has been promoted to assistant manager.

Be like chalk and cheese: tưởng giống nhưng mà lại rất khác

Ex: My brother and I are like chalk and cheese.

Make one’s mouth water: thèm chảy nước miếng

Ex: The smell of that bacon cooking is making my mouth water.

Ex: Instead of just buying Sam a birthday gift, let’s spice things up by taking him out for dinner.

A piece of cake: dễ như ăn bánh

Ex: I have been studying so hard in preparation for this mid-term test, so it should be a piece of cake for me.

Cool as a cucumber: bình tĩnh, thoải mái

Ex: He had very bad news last night, but he came to the office as cool as a cucumber this morning as if nothing had happened.

Bring home the bacon: kiếm tiền nuôi gia đình

Ex: Ever since her father was injured, she’s been working two jobs to bring home the bacon.

Compare apples and oranges: so sánh hai thứ quá khác nhau

Ex: You can’t compare those two companies because they’re apples and oranges!

Eat like a bird: ăn rất ít

Ex: Don’t trouble yourself cooking such a big meal. I eat like a bird.

Butter someone up: cố gắng tâng bốc, làm hài lòng ai đó

Ex: You will have to butter him up a bit before they will agree to give you the permission.

A storm in a teapot: phản ứng tức giận, lo lắng hoặc không hài lòng về 1 vấn đề nhỏ

Ex: My boss thinks it’s just a storm in a teacup – there probably won’t be layoffs at all.

Chew the fat: trò chuyện

Ex: We sat in a bar most of the evening just chewing the fat.

Ex: An afternoon coffee break, or afternoon tea, sometimes occurs as well.

To have one’s cake and eat it: làm/ ăn/sử dụng một thứ gì đó cho đến khi nó biến mất nhưng vẫn không từ bỏ

Ex: He was never at home, but was surprised when she left him. He always wanted to have his cake and eat it.

Out to lunch: Cư xử một cách ngu ngốc và điên cuồng

Ex: I always thought she acted strangely, she was totally out to lunch.

To stuff your face: ăn quá nhiều và quá nhanh (negative).

Ex: He’s always stuffing his face. No wonder he’s so fat.

The apple never falls far from the tree: Cha (mẹ) nào con nấy, mang tính tiêu cực, chỉ trích

Ex: Jane’s mother was a thief and bad person and so is Jane. That apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

To be the apple of one’s eye: điều/ ai đó mà bạn yêu quý nhất, cảm thấy (họ) là người tuyệt vời nhất trong mắt mình

Ex: He loved his son, but his daughter was the apple of his eye.

Pig out: ăn rất nhiều

Ex: We pigged out on all the delicious cakes and pastries at the party last night.

Eat up: ăn hết mọi thứ được cho

Ex: Come on, eat your food up or you’ll be hungry!

Pick at: ăn một cách miễn cưỡng

Ex: Are you feeling alright? You’ve been picking at your food for ages.

Cut out: cắt giảm

Ex: Sorry, no cake for me. I’m cutting out of sugar.

Cut back (on): giảm lượng tiêu dùng

E.g: My doctor told me I need to cut back on fat.

Bolt down = Wolf down: ăn ngấu nghiến, ăn rất nhanh

Ex: I wolf down my breakfast this morning because I had no time.

Whip up: nấu ăn nhanh và đơn giản

Ex: Here we are, something I whipped up yesterday.

Cut up: chia nhỏ đồ ăn

Ex: Do you want me to cut up your cake for you?

Chop up: chặt nhỏ, băm nhỏ

Ex: If you cut the pie up, I’ll chop up the vegetables.

Boil over: đun tràn (nước) ra

Ex: Can you run and get the peas?I think they’re boiling over.

Warm up: làm nóng

Ex: Do you want me to warm up your dinner for you when you get home?

Fry up: chiên rán đồ ăn

Ex: Do you want me to fry up some bacon?

Get the munchies: đói bụng

Ex: When I get the munchies, I just can’t stop eating – it’s one snack after another.

Drool over: thèm thuồng cái gì

Ex: The dog drooled over his meat.
